Stronger than Cancer Young Hero 5K Run/Walk
About the Event
Fourteen-year-old Elijah Holland is this year’s POST event Ambassador. This brave young man has faced down cancer multiple times and survived a bone marrow transplant with his brother as his donor. In his honor, Be The Match will be on-site to swab potential bone marrow donors to save even more lives.
Elijah and other local children diagnosed with cancer who have received compassionate emotional and financial help with Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) will lead off the race at 7:30.
The course is flat, fast and lined with superheroes as homage to the brave, young heroes fighting for their lives. Along the course runners will earn beads of hope, strength, resilience, and bravery that represent a child’s cancer journey.
There will be a contest for the Coolest Team Name, Best Superhero Costume, Best Pet Costume, and Best Fundraising Team. There are Celebration of Life stations like Cancer Stops Here where participants can throw chalk bombs at cancer, don gold boxing gloves to Fight Cancer Like a Kid, and Inspiration Station where the community can write messages of hope and encouragement to those fighting cancer.
The family-friendly event will have a 10-yard Diaper Dash for kids under 3 years old, 100-yard Young Hero dash for kids ages 4-9, and a Kidz Fun Zone.
Young survivors will tell their stories of hope and inspiration on Courage Cam!
Dr. Barbara Abernathy, POST CEO, said, “This event offers a way for the community to help local children fight cancer by raising funds and by learning more about what it takes for these families to face a cancer journey that often takes years. These kids need to know they matter. You can run, walk, or volunteer. We have something for everyone.”
Registration is $35 for adults. All proceeds benefit POST to provide more services. POST’s goal is to raise $75,000 to help amazing local kids fight cancer. Learn more and register at www.postfl.org/5k.
